FAQ

How does Cutek allow the timber to naturally grey and remain protected?

The distinctive silver-grey appearance of aged timber is highly valued by many for its aesthetic appeal. The main challenge has been preserving this natural weathered look while ensuring the wood remains protected.

CUTEK®’s innovative approach to protection means that by using CUTEK® in its clear oil form, the timber is allowed to naturally age and develop its grey patina, while still being effectively protected from within.

How does Cutek differ from traditional coatings?

CUTEK® offers a novel approach to protecting wood from the damaging effects of moisture, diverging from the traditional barrier method.

Unlike conventional coatings, CUTEK® does not form a hard, film-like barrier on the wood’s surface. Instead, it functions by penetrating deep into the wood, providing protection from the inside out.

As a true penetrating oil, CUTEK® diffuses throughout the wood, remaining permanently mobile within its structure. Its unique mechanism actively displaces both liquid and gas-phase moisture, offering a dynamic form of protection that adapts to the wood’s natural moisture content variations.

Is Cutek a timber coating?

Cutek protects the timber but unlike conventional coatings, CUTEK® does not form a hard, film-like barrier on the wood’s surface. Instead, it functions by penetrating deep into the wood, providing a deeper layer of protection.

How long does the Cutek preservative oil remain in the timber decking?

CUTEK® remains within the timber decking and every reapplication will have an cumulative effect adding to the long-term protection and greatly extending the service life of your timber deck.

How do traditional coatings protect my deck?

Nearly all protective coatings for timber decking aim to prevent moisture ingress by forming a barrier. hese barriers are on the surface layers of the decking. The majority of these protective coatings are either water-based or oil-based coating, which upon drying, create a hard layer that shields the wood from moisture.

This method has traditionally been effective in preserving timber, maintaining its durability and appearance over time. However, the protective barrier is only as good as its weakest point; any deterioration, perforation, split, or crack can compromise its effectiveness. Therefore, regular maintenance is essential to preserve the coating’s integrity and ensure ongoing protection against moisture.

What makes timber decking split, cup , warp and bow?

Almost all problems associated with exterior timber decking are caused by exposure to moisture. This includes issues such as cupping, warping, splitting, swelling, and shrinking, which are all a result of moisture movement within the timber decking.

Understanding the behaviour of moisture in wood is crucial; wood absorbs moisture from the air or direct contact with water, leading to expansion, and releases moisture when the air is dry, resulting in contraction. This continuous cycle of absorption and release, if not controlled, can severely compromise the structural integrity and aesthetic appearance of timber decking.
