Deck restoration Options
1. Deck Sanding
Pros
- Flattens the deck, removes all cupping and bowing.
- Removes all existing coatings
- Can make old timber look new again
Cons
- Nails need to be punched before sanding, not always a con as some decks have protruding nails that
need to be punched for safety reasons. - Decks that have been screwed can’t be sanded unless screws are countersunk.
2. Nylon wire brush sander
Pros
- Can sand directly over the deck screw and nails
- Removes all existing coatings coatings and dead timber
Cons
- Does not flatten the deck or remover cupping and bowing of decking boards
3. Chemical stripper and pressure clean
Pros
- Sometimes it is the only option that works
Cons
- Can be a slow and difficult process that may need to be done more the once, it is never as easy as the sales rep may have advised it was going to be
- If pressure cleaning is not done at the correct water pressure it can cause permanent damage to the deck

FAQ
What is a restored deck?
A restored timber deck is an existing deck brought back to bare timber ready to coat.
How do I know if my deck needs to be restored?
There are number of reasons that trigger people to restore their timber deck.
- Existing deck stains have failed to protect the decking and need to be removed.
- Deck boards may be cupping, bowing, warping and splitting.
- The deck has been extended and has had some boards replaced that need to be blended in with the existing decking.
- The deck may have mould, dirt or grit build up that can’t be removed easily or at all.
- The deck may have a coating on it that is disliked and it is time to get it right.
What is the best way to restore my deck?
There are numerous ways to restore a timber deck and we regularly perform all of them. We believe that no one method is necessarily better than another but it is important to properly assess the deck to determine the best method so you get the outcome you require.
How can I remove cupping and bowing out of my deck?
The only way you can remove cupping and bowing from your deck is to sand it flat, at Beachlife Floors we use a Hummel 200mm belt sander and a 180mm edger.
See timelapse videos below of the sander in action.
Are nylon brush sanders better than the traditional belt sanders?
The answer is No and YES depending on the job at hand, at Beachlife Floors we prefer the traditional belt sander because it not only removes the existing coating, it flattens the deck and gives it a better smooth sanded finish.
Nylon wire brush sanders are great at removing the existing coating from a timber deck where the screws or nails prevent using a deck sander.
Nylon wire brush sanders can do a great job when they are required but we prefer the finish we get from using a Hummel belt sander.
Beachlife Floors has both belt sanders and nylon wire brush sanders when required.
Can i pressure clean my deck instead of sanding?
Yes you can use chemical strippers and a high-pressure water cleaner.
Beachlife Floors only use a chemical stripper with a pressure cleaner when we have no other feasible option. Using this method can be slow and tedious, and most strippers will stop working when they dry out in the heat or get wet.
Special care must be taken when water pressure cleaning your timber deck, If the water pressure is too high you can do irreparable damage to your deck.
If you can’t get the old painted or varnished deck coating off at a lower pressure then you may need to let the deck dry out and reactivate the stripper by applying another coat of stripper.
We don’t believe stripping and pressure cleaning will ever give you a finish as good as sanding but they are sometimes the only option.
